James Rice

James Rice, son of William Brice and Elizabeth (White) Rice, was born in 1794 in Monroe County, Virginia.  He married (1) Rachel Mary Wiseman, 23 December 1816 in Monroe County.  She was the daughter of Isaac and Mary (Armentrout) Wiseman.  He married (2) Elizabeth “Betsy” Ramsey, 17 October 1818, also in Monroe County, Virginia.  She was the daughter of Richard and Elizabeth (?) Ramsey.  Elizabeth was born in 1799 and died in 1835.  He married (3) Anna Kirkpatrick Poor on 5 March 1836, in Waverly, Pike County, Ohio.  James died 12 November 1881 in Jackson County, Ohio.  He is buried next to his wife Elizabeth in the Rice Cemetery in Jackson County, Ohio.

 

James was drafted into the War of 1812 as a Private in Captain Andrew Nichol’s Company at Uniontown, Monroe County, VA, on 19 July 1814.  He was stationed at Craney Island, Virginia and did duty in drilling and keeping guard.  He was honorably discharged at Norfolk, VA, 8 February 1815.

 

According to family tradition, the James Rice family, which included James, Elizabeth, their oldest son, and Elizabeth’s mother, along with the families of Miller and Kessinger,  left Willow Bend, Monroe County, Virginia for Ohio on the morning of 1 November 1820.  The group included 15 people, 3 horses and a wagon.  The families arrived on 15 November 1820 at the home of Reubin Dickason in Jackson County, Ohio.  James acquired 80 acres four miles east of Jackson, built a one-room log cabin and cleared land for crops.

 

Children of James and Elizabeth (Ramsey) Rice are:

  • William Brice (1819-1911) married Sarah Ann Lucas on 15 October 1840 in Jackson County, Ohio

  • Levi

  • Richard

  • George Washington, born 4 November 1824, Jackson County, Ohio, Jackson, Ohio, married Cynthia Literal (born in 1825) on 16 October 1845 in Jackson County, Ohio.  George died in Jackson County, Ohio on 17 August 1910 and is buried in Fairmont Cemetery, Jackson, Jackson County, Ohio.  Cynthia died on 4 December 1859 and is buried in Rice Cemetery in Jackson County, Ohio.  Their children included:

  • Samuel Ira, born 6 July 1846 in Jackson, Jackson County, Ohio and died 27 December 1926 in Jackson County, Ohio, married Mary Ellen Blair 13 December 1865 in Jackson, Jackson County, Ohio.  She was born 10 August 1847 and died 30 December 1916 in Jackson County, Ohio.  Ira served in the Civil War.
